St Ives & District Euchre League Rules
2004/2005 Season

PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL PLAYERS READ THESE RULES AND ADHERE TO THEM

I. Each team will consist of six registered players comprising a combination of three pairs. These pairs must be nominated on the score sheet at the start of the evening. Substitutes will be allowed during the course of the evening but it is advised that agreement is reached between the captains prior to the start of the evening. In case of any disagreement contact the Chairman, Nigel (Halsetown A). Once a player has signed for a team he/she will not be able to play for another team for the remainder of the season.

II. Each match will comprise a total of eighteen games with each pair playing six games.

III. After each game the home team will move one table forwards in a clockwise direction ensuring that each pair play each other twice but not in immediate rotation. The away team will always sit at the same diagonal and in the same seat all evening.

IV. Each team captain must complete a scorecard which, once signed by both captains, is evidence of the agreed match result. One must be returned to the Results Secretary not later than the Thursday following the Monday match. The other is to be retained by the home team for reference if necessary.

V. Home teams must provide adequate room for three tables of play, three packs of unmarked cards and three marker boards to a minimum of fifteen points.

VI. Each game will be played until one pair reaches fifteen points. Please remember ONLY to score your own points - your opponents do not need your help with theirs!

VII. The dealer will have the last shout on any call made.

VIII. The words to be used during the game will be ‘PASS’, ‘PICK IT UP’, ‘ALONE’ and ‘DIP’. Other responses will be allowed but only if they are unambiguous and all calls will be made in order. In the event of these rules not being obeyed, the opposing captain has the right to claim that individual game but only after consultation with the players involved and the captain of the other team. But remember - these instructions should be enforced by the captains please.

IX. No cards are to be picked up until after the dealer has turned over the trump card.

X. If the dealer turns the Benny the suit must be called before any of his/her cards are seen. The Benny will be treated as any other card. Players may pass or order it up. The dealer, on his/her turn, may turn the card.

XI. All five cards in each hand must be played out.

XII. No match may be cancelled with less than 48 hours notice without good cause. If a team is going to be late they must telephone the waiting opponents in advance and give a good reason for beginning later than the official start time of 8 pm. Failure to do this will mean the forfeiting of the first three games 15-0 if they have not arrived by 8.15 pm. The total match will be lost if opponents have not arrived by 8.30 pm and have not contacted the waiting pub’s landlord or euchre captain with 13 points being awarded to the winning team. If a match is cancelled it must be re-arranged within 10 days. Failure to do this will result in the offending team losing the match and the winners being awarded 13 points.

XIII. Any team unable to play three consecutive games will automatically be dropped from the league and all their points zeroed.

XIV. In the event of a problem any team may call a special meeting of all clubs with the support of a seconder. The minimum notice is seven days.

XV. While every effort is always made to notify teams of venues and times in the knockout competitions, the onus must be on players to check if they have not been informed.

XVI. The player to the right of the dealer must be offered the deck for cutting. The player then has the option to either cut or ‘tap’ the pack.

XVII. New players may be registered at any time during the season. Both scorecards should be endorsed on the back with any new players and the player subs must accompany the scorecard to the League Secretary. Once a player has played for a team, he/she may not play for another team during that season.

N.B. Please remember that this league is a friendly one based on good sportsmanship rather than winning at all costs! If you do have a grievance, let the committee know and hopefully any problem can be sorted out amicably. Teams will be welcomed by the host establishments and food will be provided at a convenient time during the evening. In return the teams are expected to refrain from bad language or unruly behaviour.

There will be independent markers required for all semi-finals and finals of knockouts. The markers will need to be found from the venue of the match as it will be on neutral ground. In the event of a draw during team knock-outs the captains’ pairs are to play a deciding game.

PLEASE NOTE the scoring.
There is a 3 point bonus for a win and a 1 point bonus for a draw.
